The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Pyrenean area of Lerida embraces great biological and scenic value. Highlights include numerous lakes of glacial origin as well as several peaks above 3,000 metres on the Bessiberri y Punta Alta massif.

Of its many magnificent valleys, the most scenic is the valley of the river San Nicolás to the West, whose meadows and meandering river have inspired the park's name ("aguas tortuosas", winding waters); and to the East, the valley of the River Escrita, with the lake of San Mauricio.

The great contrast in altitude gives rise to distinct bioclimatic zones where, thanks to protection and limited access, both flora and fauna have been conserved in their wild condition.
